In the past six months three significant light shows have appeared in the sky and I noticed people have been looking up instead of down. Some say we are living in very dark times, but I feel we are living in a time of great enlightenment. It's all about perspective and balance.
On April 8th I got to experience a total solar eclipse on a beach overlooking Lake Champlain in New York where I sat for hours with folks who wanted to see something they'd never seen in their lives. More recently the Northern Lights came to my neck of the woods. Facebook was filled with images of the night sky wearing neon pink and green like a 1980s fashion show. And now there's a comet capturing everyone's attention. Apparently it won't be seen again for another 80,000 years or so.
Our ancestors may have feared these rare visions in the celestial realm assuming the gods were angry or the end of the world was at hand. But most of us on the planet today are aware of these natural wonders and long to capture them with our curiosity and cameras.
I'm the type of person who likes to identify patterns. I find symbolic meaning in everything from my waking life to my dreams. For example, looking back at the second paragraph above, I notice I used the number 8 three times. Eight in numerology symbolizes balance and infinity. As I reflect on the recent illuminations in the sky, I notice a balance of light and dark energies. I see people's attention going back and forth between the material realm of the earth and the upper realm of the vast and mysterious universe. Flashes of light in the sky temporarily took us away from our more grounded concerns where we worry and toil (and look down at our phones). Moments of enlightenment awaken us from our day dreams and we feel the interconnectivity of everything across time and space.
We need to experience these flashes of light and once in a lifetime events to remind us of the uniqueness of this moment, of the magic that exists in the universe, of the big picture beyond taxes and death.
If you missed the light show, don't worry. Nature is constantly putting on a show for us even at ground level. We can always catch a sunrise or sunset on the horizon, or the cycle of changing leaves and the spring bloom.
As long as you seek balance every day you will be able to face whatever comes into view. Despite the negativity dominating the news, I believe things are looking up. Look up and read the signs in the sky. Look up and ask the question why. Look up and wonder in awe. Just keep looking up in your heart and mind. A new age of enlightenment is upon us and soon we will all remember we came here to shine.
